GOTO AKI
Born in Kawasaki, Japan in 1972, Goto Aki studied economics at Sophia University and photography at the Tokyo College of Photography. Following a year-long journey around the world in 1993–94, he has since traveled to 56 countries. After working in the energy sector at Marubeni Corporation, where he was involved in natural gas pipeline logistics, he shifted his path toward photography. He studied under Kiyoshi Suzuki and Norio Kobayashi, from whom he learned the philosophy of “thinking through photography,” a principle that continues to shape both his creative and educational practice.Goto Aki focuses primarily on natural landscapes across Japan, exploring the underlying structures, rhythms, and the resonant interplay of light and color. His photographic work navigates the space between visual autonomy and spiritual introspection. Major projects include the photobooks and exhibitions LAND ESCAPES, LAND ESCAPES FACE, and terra. His solo exhibition terra at Canon Gallery S and the accompanying book (published by AKAAKA) earned him the Newcomer's Award from the Japan Photographic Society in 2020.In recent years, he has embarked on a new series titled Tabi-gori: Non-linear Landscapes, created by walking long distances along ancient pilgrimage routes in the Kii Peninsula. In an age of accelerating digital and AI technologies, his practice reclaims the role of the body in artistic perception—seeking photographic expressions born from tactile dialogue with the land. He is currently Associate Professor at Nihon University College of Art.
